The Varia is an elite independent assassination squad under the Vongola Famiglia. They are genius assassins who work in the deepest recesses of the Mafia. They are synonymous for their skill, which is called "Varia Quality."[1]

Their flag contains the text Squadra killer autonoma di Vongola IX, lit. "Autonomous Assassination Team of Vongola IX".

Description[]

Each member takes on missions that are said to be impossible to accomplish by humans;[1] however, they do not accept a mission unless the chance of success is 90% or higher. Those that see them work often say that their high-level assassination skills are demonic.

The Varia are said to kill any member who fails in order to eliminate weakness, which is why the Varia are the strongest of all.[2] However, it seems that they are injured rather than killed outright, since despite past failures Lussuria, Squalo, and Viper are still alive.

Despite lacking loyalty and respect for other members, they are extremely loyal to their leader, Xanxus. As professional killers, they obey only him. The Varia also appears to have more than fifty subordinates ranged under the command of the main members. The Varia are based in Italy and apparently reclusive.

Executive members are afforded Varia Rings, A-Rank rings that can harness Dying Will Flames of the Sky.

  • Other remaining known members of the Varia include a 50-member reinforcement squad[3] and numerous grunts.
  • In the future, the Varia seem to have downsized, seeing as the Varia party that raided Millefiore headquarters is said to consist of only 32 members.[4]
  • There are at least 10 other Mists outside of Mammon and Fran.[5]

Varia has a headquarters in which the core members live. Known facilities in it are their respective bedrooms and bathrooms, their dining and meeting rooms, and Xanxus' office. It is also a castle.

Trivia[]

  • Each of their names (Latin names) matches one of the Seven Deadly Sins or the respective demons of the sins, excluding Fran:
  • Doctor Shamal was originally asked to join the Varia two generations ago in the past; however, he declined the offer.[6]
  • In the manga extras, it's stated that there are many variations of the Varia uniform. This could be the origin of their name.[citation needed]
  • Varia is Latin for Vicovaro, a commune in Italy. Also, the word varia means "varies" in Italian and Portuguese, and "various" in Latin.
  • It's also possible that the name comes from a species of scallop (chlamys varia) which are said to live near the bottom unlike clams ("Vongola" means "clam" in Italian). This fits the mollusk theme of the Vongola family, and also perhaps alluding to the fact they take care of Vongola's "dirty" work. There are also clams on their coat of arms that makes this seem highly likely.
  • In recent Reborn! Famiglia polls, the Varia ranked 3rd.
  • To join the Varia, you have to speak a minimum of seven languages.[citation needed]
  • They have yet to replace Gola Moska and this remains unchanged in the future, so they lack a Cloud Guardian.
  • M.M claims that the Varia have a "paltry" salary and that the Kokuyo Junior High Gang are more highly paid. Whether this is true remains unknown.
  • The Varia have their own private jet (seen during The Curse of the Rainbow Arc).
  • As stated by Fran in the future, the Varia are open to suggestions for their victims' manner of death.[citation needed]
    • This was first seen enacted by Squalo, who asked Tsunayoshi Sawada & Basil how they wanted to die when he first battled them.[7]
