[edit] Character Outline

Superbi Squalo is an assassin and the second-in-command of the Varia, the Vongola family's independent assassin squad. He is most notable for his long silver hair, and is always seen wearing his Varia uniform in both the anime and the manga. He is a very loud character, and has a tendency to shout "VOOOI!!!" (basically, the Italian version of the French word "Vous") before saying something or while in battle. Squalo, as revealed in the Rain Ring Battle against Yamamoto Takeshi, cut off his left hand and replaced it with a mechanized sword. His reason for doing that was so he could better understand how the previous Sword Emperor, Tyr, (also the previous boss of the Varia) felt and battled, since he did not have a left hand either. Squalo also seems to be quite perceptive, seeing right through Genkishi's Mist Illusions when the man tried to fake a loss.

[edit] Plot Outline

[edit] Varia Arc

Squalo first arrives in Namimori after battling Basil all the way to where Tsuna and his family are dining downtown. He at first does not know who Tsuna is, and when Yamamoto and Gokudera step in to aid Tsuna in fighting him, he does not recognize them either. Squalo takes Yamamoto on first, and deduces that he doesn't know a style because his swings are light. He defeats him by shooting several small amounts of gunpowder from his sword into the ground, blowing him up. Next, Squalo gets the jump on Gokudera by slashing the fuses off of his dynamite. He then delivers a punishing kick to Gokudera and knocks him out. Dying Will Tsuna steps up to him, but Squalo easily catches his opponent's punches while simultaneously realizing who he is. Squalo beats Tsuna and before he can land the finishing blow, Dino, current boss of the Cavallone family steps in. He steals the fake Half Vongola Rings and takes his leave, reluctant to cause even more trouble by fighting an allied Family.

Squalo delivers the rings to Xanxus, his boss (therefore the boss of the Varia) as was his task, but Xanxus recognizes them as fakes sooner than Reborn and the others expected. He appears in most of the Ring Battles as a spectator, as well as a commenter on the Varia's side.

Later, Squalo fights Yamamoto in the Rain Ring Battle. Squalo is certain he's going to win when he discovers that Yamamoto fights with a style he has already learned and beaten. But he ends up losing the battle because he does not know the secret of the Shigure Souen style: it branches off at who their past mentor was to make sure that the style remains strong and undefeatable. In the process the techniques may change. Squalo is defeated by Yamamoto's technique that he added to the sword style; Mirroring Rain.

[edit] Future Arc

Squalo, ten years later

Squalo seen again during the Future Arc when he takes command of the Varia's core group (minus Xanxus, Gola Mosca, and Mammon) with a new member named Fran participating in their raid in Italy. The group then splits up into Belphegor and Fran, Levi and Lussuria, and Squalo alone. He encounters some of the lower ranking Varia members assigned to feed Xanxus, but then senses enemies approaching. He releases his Squalo Grande Pioggia (Heavy Rain Shark) to defeat them.

Squalo later comes to the forefront when he learns that Yamamoto lost to Genkishi. He arrives in the Vongola Hideout with a gift of tuna to Dino, and viciously attacks Yamamoto by socking him in the gut who, without any of his guards up, is easily knocked out. Squalo carries him off to train him.

[edit] Choice

Squalo appears in chapter 243, page 2. He has been hiding out in the base Shouichi constructed and as such was the second known stowaway. It seems that Yamamoto harbors no ill will towards him.

During Tsuna's fight with Torikabuto, he notices that Tsuna's Sky Lion is very similar to Xanxus's Sky Lion (they are from the same weapon series).

In Chapter 246 and 247 Squalo is shown trying to persuade Yamamoto into taking the sword seriously. He does not like Yamamoto's childish behavior in the Future Arc.

Squalo is prepares to face to Zakuro

He later defends Uni from an attack by Kikyo and Zakuro with Hibari, staying behind to fight alongside Dino so that Tsuna can escape with Uni. After returning to Vongola HQ he tries contacting Lussuria for backup, though nobody can be sent. The transmission gets cut off by Zakuro's attack. Squalo is able to use his Rain flames to fend off Zakuro's Storm flames, and tries to buy time while the others escape. He loses his prosthetic sword hand and is defeated by Zakuro without any difficulty. Whether or not he survives is unknown, though judging from his wounds and the amount of blood, it's not very likely. Dino believes Squalo was defeated only because Byakuran has fought them in a parallel world and therefore knows all their techniques, briefing the Real 6 Funeral Wreaths on their abilities, their strengths, and their weaknesses.

[edit] Weapons

  • Arm-mounted Sword - Squalo cut off his own left hand and replaced it with this sword. It has an added advantage of having no blind spots, since Squalo's fake hand can move a full 360 degrees. Squalo used it to counteract an attack coming from behind during the Rain Ring Battle.
  • Grande Pioggia Squalo ~ Heavy Rain Shark - Squalo's Box Weapon, which resembles a great white shark and is powerful enough to defeat enemies on its own. It is able to levitate above the ground, as well as swim in actual water. He tends to use the shark before going into physical combat alongside his box weapon.

[edit] Trivia

  • Squalo, when translated, literally means 'shark' in Italian. Superbi was taken from Superbia, which can be translated to pride/arrogance, one of the Seven Deadly Sins. He shares the sin trait with the rest of the Varia members, who names and personalities each resemble a sin (Wrath, Lust, Greed, Sloth, Gluttony, Envy, and Pride).
  • He and Adult Yamamoto share the now joint title of Sword Emperor.
  • Squalo was born on March 13th; his blood type is O; he is 182cm (6 feet, 0 inches) tall; and weighs 75kg (165 lbs).
  • In one of Haru's HaruHaru: Dangerous interviews, Reborn states that Squalo is the loudest member of the mafia according to Fuuta's Rankings.
  • There is some confusion about his last name: Superbia or Superbi.
  • In a recent popularity poll, Squalo ranked sixth, with 5,328 votes.
