Ryohei Sasagawa is the older brother of Kyoko Sasagawa, both of who are characters in the Katekyo Hitman Reborn! series. A third year student at Namimori Middle School, he is also the captain of the boxing club. Obsessed with boxing and ever on the lookout for new members, Ryohei would urge Tsunayoshi Sawada to join having been impressed with him in his Dying Will Mode state. Living life to the extreme, Ryohei rarely misses a chance to share his enthusiasm on matters. In his dedication to boxing, he would be up for the training provided by Master PaoPao.

As a character, Ryohei is featured in the manga and its anime adaption among other media. This was more so when Ryohei was chosen to be the Tenth Generation Sun Guardian of the Vongola Famiglia. With training help from Colonnello he would develop his signature Maximum Cannon punch as his boxing capabilities became ever more impressive. Applying his skills against foes, Ryohei also supports his comrades as they fight their battles.

In seeking to protect his sister, and being a force for good in what would turn out to be his environment of being involved with what were Mafia related activities, Ryohei joins Tsuna as he was trained to become the next leader of a family where they and others prevail over hostile forces. While Ryohei would get along well with Takeshi Yamamoto, where Hayato Gokudera was quick to pick a fight, so would Ryohei although it would descend into bickering. Addressed as "Lawn head" he would be just as fast to demand to know what "Octopus-head" had just said.

Character outline[]

Appearance[]

He has tanned skin, and striking gray eyes. More notable for him is his ashen colored hair. Relatively short and appearing a similar length all over his head, Ryohei's hair is also unkept in style. The color of Ryohei's hair is a slightly whiter shade than his gray colored eyebrows. His almost straight eyebrows tilt down to his eyes which helps form the often determined expression seen on him. Happy or serious, whatever Ryohei is feeling, his somewhat furrowed brow at such times helps showcase his ever extreme outlook.

His athletic build is almost certainly a result of his boxing related training exercises. While Ryohei is in the year above he is around the same height as Gokudera, and shorter than Yamamoto. For comparison purposes, Ryohei is tall though there are taller members of his friendship circle. When a child, he received a scar on his left temple after an accident in primary school. The long thin scar is over his left eyebrow. As the older brother of Kyoko, Ryohei looks noticeably different compared to his sister where they have no physical traits in common.

School clothing

The most recurring outfit of Ryohei is his Namimori Junior High uniform. He wears a black sweater, with a white formal shirt underneath. Often the long sleeves will be visible outside the sweater, and similarly the bottom of the shirt can be seen as Ryohei declines to tuck it into his gray pants. Casual clothes worn outside of school include hoodies and pants along with trainer based footwear. Collared shirts worn open are also a clothing choice. While running, track bottoms are seen to be worn.

Some of Ryohei's most defining and consistent hallmarks are the adhesive bandage on his nose, and the sports tape around his fists. These features are kept even for future Ryohei where he has maintained the exact same coverings. Physically, future Ryohei is taller where his slightly longer hair is more messy and upright in style. For his partial bangs, where they were down before now he has his hair upright to keep his face visible.

Keeping a collared shirt to wear as he did as a student, future Ryohei has an orange one under a black mafia style suit. A black tie is also worn at times. In having his top button done up with little clothing worn loose, future Ryohei has a smarter appearance to his attire. Casual garments include a raised collared beige jacket over a green undershirt.

Chapter 304 cover

Battle ready in his boxing attire

When partaking in boxing competitions, or having his related powers active, Ryohei battles without a top on. Either pants or shorts can be worn in such situations. His choice of boxing gloves are black and white ones. Navy blue and metallic silver boxing like gloves are another indication of the mixed color options for his hand wear.

Personality[]

His motto is to live "to the extreme!" (or "Extreme" (極限, kyokugen?)), which he applies to everything he does. Eating and sleeping to the extreme are no exception. Applied to combat as well, Ryohei prefers to battle his opponents head on where a competitive nature energizes his willingness to engage in a fair fight. In possession of a brawling eagerness resistant to being quelled, Ryohei even barged into a zoo with the intention of fighting a bear. Undeterred when that was not an option, Ryohei kept his unsubdued battle-readiness when he ended up fighting a lion instead.

An approach of heading into a matter seemingly without thought as to what the outcome would be was also evident when Ryohei volunteered to show Tsuna how to swim. This was despite the fact that Ryohei is a horrible swimmer who does not seem to know it. After belly-flopping his way into the water, Ryohei proceeded to sink to the bottom and begin twitching. Not acknowledging this in the face of the evidence, ironically Ryohei works part-time as a lifeguard.

Should anything be regarded as a disadvantage fighting wise, Ryohei sees this as a chance to improve his skills. His pride is that he always fights one on one as a boxer. Every time he sees Tsuna and his friends doing something strange, Ryohei gets riled up and wants to be a part of it. Due to Ryohei's enthusiasm, he often rushes into things without fully evaluating the situation, which may result in his injury. Unfazed however, Ryohei gives praise where he feels it was due as when he was knocked out the ring by Tsuna in his dying will state. A good sportsman, Ryohei seriousness can be replaced by praising those who have done well.

His resolution is apparent and it did not take Ryohei to be hit by the Dying Will Bullet for this to be known. Where the bullet had no effect on him as he already lives to the limit, Ryohei displays an unwavering approach to shrugging off major injuries which is unlikely to have come from his personal training alone. Unconcerned at enduring physical harm to himself, possibly since that comes within the territory of the hobbies he has, Ryohei also experiences no injury to his pride either. Even when soundly overcome in a fight, Ryohei concentrates on ensuring that his sister remains unaware of his state to prevent her from worrying. Rather than himself, Ryohei's concern is that others may be worried for him which is something he does not want to see.

Having a merry willingness to invent stories to explain what can come across as dangerous situations, Ryohei does this to prevent others, specifically his sister, from becoming upset. Arriving to cover Tsuna's mouth when he was asked by Kyoko what was going on, Ryohei claimed they were involved in a harmless sumo wrestling match. Maintaining the ruse no matter how extraordinarily unbelievable it becomes, Ryohei seemed convinced he could have Kyoko believe that he truly was involved in a sumo wrestling match despite having battled a dangerous foe in a boxing round where he had endured major injuries.

Ryohei is a very loyal person, especially to his friends who he is ready to involve in his stories. Without thinking twice, he will protect his friends in need and never hesitate to go full-out in order to defend them. Undaunted in response to dangerous situations, Ryohei fights bravely. Having a soft spot for girls and children, Ryohei stated that they should not be allowed to participate in battle. This came from him wanting to defend them, perhaps combined with an unspoken thought that as a man he was to protect them himself. For battle capable friends Ryohei acts as one of them, still willing to defend them but aware that they can handle themselves, however for those felt to need defending, Ryohei keeps them firmly out even the idea that they could be in danger.

Enforcing his feelings, Ryohei never agrees to bring his sister Kyoko, along with Haru Miura, and I-Pin to a battlefield during the Choice Game. Indeed it was heavily Ryohei as to why the perceived non-battling members of the group were kept in the dark on their predicament in the future. Even given the benefits of others being aware of what also affecting them, Ryohei takes it upon himself to trust in himself and his powerful friends to deal with a matter. While it displays a great deal of belief in what Ryohei feels he can handle, as well as the extent of the trust he has in his friends, such well-meaning sentiment was arguably not as helpful to who he meant to protect given the problem a lack of knowledge could have for those involved.

After acting as a mafioso for ten years, future Ryohei noticeably became more mature than his younger self. Unlike his younger self, future Ryohei is much less reckless and could discuss a serious matter with a cool head. Before, Ryohei would demand answers out of a need to know a situation promptly. For when it seemed that Ryohei had a short memory and forgot many important details, future Ryohei addressed this and overcame the issue by writing memos.

His future self seems to understand how to make children happy, as he gave I-Pin a doll that resembles her master, Fon and a lollipop for Lambo. More thoughtful in consdering others, Ryohei provided gifts appropriate to the friends he was giving them to. Still remaining a guardian in the sense of defending those felt to need it, during the Future Final Battle Arc, he volunteered to watch over Lambo so he could protect him should the situation become tough.

For other traits, it was shown that Ryohei has extremely bad drawing skills.[4] His favorite flavor of shaved ice is strawberry.[5] Ryohei dislikes that he has the Virgo (乙女座, Otomeza?) horoscope, which literally means "maiden."

Weapons and Abilities[]

His weapons are his fists, and his proficiency in using them affords him a range of abilities. Ryohei is an excellent boxer who possesses great strength to imbue in his punches. Training in such hand-to-hand combat has been of benefit too. In sustained training, which includes jogging, Ryohei also develops his stamina. An ability to take and give a huge amount of physical punishment is helpful for Ryohei's endurance, and in overcoming strong opponents. This was all before Ryohei would gain access to power generating Rings and Box Weapons.

A firm resolve is a handy asset to enhance his physical capabilities. Ryohei is also keen to fight against opponents that also have an extreme spirit, as Tsuna displays in his Dying Will Mode. Even the Dying Will Bullet, which increases a person's strength by removing the body's limiters, has no effect on him since he always lives "to the extreme". An ability to not shy away from a battle and indeed be ever-ready for one has served Ryohei well in many situations.

Ryo dodges Koyo's punches

While he can endure them, evading punches brings strategy to his fighting

Despite his boxing and stamina building exercises, and that he is the captain of the club, plus in a year above, Ryohei is considered to be one of Tsuna's weaker Guardians, though only because the others are even more capable. During the Daily Life Arc, Ryohei was easily bested by Dying Will Mode Tsuna, despite being under the same effects as the latter. During the Kokuyo Arc, Ryohei was severely injured after being assailed by Ken Joshima. At the beginning of the Varia Arc, it is commented by both Reborn and Colonnello that Ryohei is weakest member of Tsuna's family.

That there are others stronger than him is no indication that Ryohei is lacking, he remains a potent force. For what he possessed, Ryohei would have Colonnello somewhat impressed by him where it was believed that if he trained him, the boxer could defeat the Guardians. Since Ryohei already has enough power to begin with, and where he is energetic, Ryohei is forced by Colonnello to rest for two days in order to replenish the cells in his body. It turns out that Ryohei frequently abuses them in his training yet he had the capacity to recognize this, and respond for the better.

It was explained by Colonnello that Ryohei's cells have a unique elasticity and tenderness that only one in a million people possess. During his training, Ryohei received a spiritually condensed bullet from Colonnello that risked death. By enduring this, Ryohei's further potential was unlocked. That and in fully focusing his power through one hand it helped create the rock-wall shattering Maximum Cannon attack. Using his right foot as the trigger and compressing the energy of his cells into his fist, as well as destroying a large boulder in a single punch, at its even greater extent Ryohei's Maximum Cannon strike could break through a metal cap that had injured his other arm.

Where unlocked powers enabled Ryohei to become capable of superhuman feats of strength, he could also use strategy to use them even more effectively. Unable to see a target who he was to punch, Ryohei instead resorted to using salt particles to break apart lights above that were restricting his vision. His punches had the force to direct such particles to smash apart the lights. In keeping a hand in reserve where only one punching arm was used, Ryohei's forward thinking allowed him to strike at the right time and with full power. Where brute force, and rapid-style methods are combat are effective, Ryohei would find bringing tactics into his fights made them more so.

A readiness to engage in combat is both a strength and a drawback for Ryohei. Even though he is strong physically and mentally, Ryohei's tendency to act first before thinking sometimes gets him into trouble as enemies usually take advantage of it. This one weakness is overcome by Future Ryohei who, having matured more, takes to looking at the situation first before jumping into action. Responding well to changes in a battle, Ryohei can also adapt to overcome them.

Without the power enhancing traits of the Vongola Sun Ring, there were Box Weapons that Ryohei could deploy. Where Sun Flame boxes could be used, Ryohei could rely on Canguro del Sereno in battles. His fighting speed would benefit where his boxe weapon could raise Ryohei off the ground to close in on a target all the faster.

Techniques[]

Maximum Cannon

The rock-wall fracturing Maximum Cannon punch

  • Boxing: Boxing techniques are employed to perform his other techniques. Uppercuts can knock contestants off their feet. A flurry of punches can deal with multiple foes.
  • Maximum Cannon: During Ryohei's training, he was shot with a spiritually condensed bullet that risked death by Colonnello. By surviving, Ryohei's potential was unlocked, enabling him to unleash a blow strong enough to destroy buildings.
  • Maximum Ingram: While using Lussuria's footwork the number of blows dealt with a regular Maximum Cannon are multiplied.
  • Maximum Combination: A high speed range of punches using both arms. While it is not as strong as other attacks, it is almost impossible to dodge.
  • Sunshine Counter: It uses the damage previously taken and fires it in a blast of sun flames. The more damage endured before it is used, the more damage it deals. Once released, it takes the form of a burning sun, with solar flares coming out of it. This power then shoots in a direct blast that destroys anything it touches.
  • Sunshine Straight: Ryohei lands a straight on the target powered up by 20% of the Sun Flames of his Cambio Forma Version X.
  • Sunshine Uppercut: A powerful uppercut that can be powered up when more damage is taken prior to usage. Similar to Sunshine Counter, it creates the sun like figure and releases the blast, this time, raising instead.

Equipment[]

  • Vongola Sun Ring: One of the seven rings won during the Sun Ring Battle. As part of the Tri-Ni-Set it is classed as S-rank. Ryohei is capable of releasing Sun Dying Will Flames from his Ring and use its Activation ability to speed up the natural healing process. Even though the Sun Flame is traditionally used for healing, Ryohei has been shown to release them in massive amounts that overpower enemies. The Vongola Rings were later granted their true forms by the Vongola Primo; however, they were later broken by the Simon Famiglia.
Kanga Ryohei

With the box weapon Garyu

  • Canguro del Sereno ver. Vongola: Ryohei's Box Weapon is a battle-scarred kangaroo, Garyu (漢我流 lit. "My Way Of Honor"). This can release Sereno Gloves and Dying Will Flame Boots. When updated to her Vongola Box Form, Garyu gains a pair of turrets on her back, has her own Boxing Gloves, and is capable of flight. When released from the Ryohei's Sun Bangle, Canguro del Sereno ver. X gains armor that covers her whole body but no longer needed the turrets to enter Cambio Forma.
  • Dying Will Flame Boots: A device that allows Ryohei to fly by blasting him off while emitting Sun flames through the soles. Ryohei is the only member of the Vongola Famiglia who uses them.
  • Motorcycle: Used to travel great distances without the use of Dying Will Flames, thus escaping detection by those who can sense them.
  • Saldatore del Sereno: A scalpel-like utensil that heals others' wounds over time.
Knuckle's Maximum Break

Knuckle's Maximum Break

  • Knuckle's Maximum Break: Garyu merges with Ryohei, to form the Weapon of the 1st Generation Vongola Sun Guardian, Knuckle, a pair of boxing gloves and head gear. In its Version X form it also includes a right shoulder armor, shin high boots and upper thigh Armor. Culminating with a tassel adorned gauntlet and wristwear along with some boxing gloves and headgear while the Bangle of the sun adorns his left arm.
  • Bangle of the Sun Version X: The upgraded version of the Vongola Sun Ring combined with Garyu's box ring.
  • Ryohei's Cambio Forma Version Vongola Gear: The Vongola Gear version of Ryohei's new weapon takes the form of red boxing gloves adorning yellow and silver bracelets. These are coupled with thigh, knee, and shin guards ending in a pair of boots. These function similarly to a pair of Dying Will Flame Boots which afford Ryohei the abilities of flight and stationary hovering. It also holds a solid gold boxing helmet and more decorated bangle design. These both carry the emblem of the sun guardian of the Vongola Famiglia. The core attribute of the Cambio Forma Version X is that not only does it no longer require a 3 min time limit to use remaining in active form indefinitely, but it also enhances the activation properties of his sun flames. This boosts attack strength by taking and dealing out back damage as indicated by the 10 points on his gear bangle.

Etymology[]

  • The name Ryohei means "done, complete/completion, finish" (了) (ryo) and "flat, broad, level, even, peaceful" (平) (hei).
  • Ryohei's surname Sasagawa means "bamboo grass" (笹) (sasa) and "river, stream" (川) (kawa/gawa).

Ryohei's photo in the manga

  • It is speculated that Hana Kurokawa is the woman he is romantically involved with, as the pictures in each of their houses are very similar.[6]
  • He is referred to as "big brother" (onii-san) by Tsuna, just like Kyoko. Another favorable term for Ryohei is that he is addressed as "Senpai" by Yamamoto. Unflattering names for Ryohei come from Gokudera and Lambo where he is nicknamed "Turf Top/Lawn-head" by them.
  • Ryohei and Knuckle both have the same Seiyu.
  • He is always in a state similar to Dying Will Mode, which is why the Dying Will Bullet is ineffective against him.
  • When Ryohei was shot with a Dying Will Bullet, he had a Sky flame instead of his normal Sun flame.[7] This is due to the other flame colors not being introduced at the time.
  • Brown hair ryohei sasgawa

In his first colored appearance on the cover of chapter 53 of the manga, Ryohei's hair color was brown.
