[edit] Character outline
Gokudera was born in Italy and is 1/2 Italian and 1/2 (mother) Japanese. It is obvious that he gets his looks from his mother as his father is shown to be a portly man with dark hair and eyes, while Gokudera's mother is shown to be tall and willowy with silver hair and bright eyes. Gokudera's blood type is B, he is 168cm tall and weighs 54kg. His future dream is to become the tenth's right-hand man. [1] Despite his image of a rebel, Hayato excels in his schoolwork and aces all his tests, much to the surprise of Tsuna. This is probably due to his rich upbringing, suggesting that he probably had a multitude of private tutors when he was young. He idolizes Tsuna greatly and considers himself to be Tsuna's right-hand man. In the manga he is a chain-smoker; often he uses his cigarettes to light his dynamite.
[edit] History
Due to a traumatic childhood experience, every time he sees the face of his older sister, Bianchi, he becomes sick, sometimes even falling unconscious. Oddly enough, he is immune to his sister when she happens to be wearing something that covers part of her face (i.e. glasses or goggles).
When he was younger, he was a talented pianist. However, he soon grew tired of playing after his 'trauma', and instead, decided to join the Mafia. Unfortunately, since he was considered to be a mere pianist, no one wanted to accept him into their family; the fact that he was an oriental half-breed lessened his chances of finding a willing Mafia family to take him in. To become stronger, he sought advice from Dr. Shamal, who, at the time, was working for his family. Hayato seemed to have looked up to Shamal, to the point that Shamal believed Hayato to have copied his hairstyle, and even wanted to learn his assassination technique, the Trident Mosquito. Instead, Shamal taught him how to use sticks of dynamite, which caused Hayato's fascination with explosives, eventually choosing them as his main weapons. This choice of weapon lead Gokudera to become known as a human explosive because he hides dynamite all over his body, giving him the nickname "Hurricane Bomb" Hayato. ("Smokin' Bomb Hayato" in the manga, respectively.)
In the future arc, more was revealed of Gokudera's past. He and Bianchi are actually half siblings, born by different mothers. Bianchi's mother was married to their father but Gokudera's mother was a woman with whom he had an affair. Gokudera's mother was a young, beautiful woman and a very talented pianist, whom their father fell in love with at first sight. Not long after, they became involved and the woman bore a child. However, in the mafia, illegitimate children are not tolerated, and everyone was told that Gokudera Hayato was actually from the same mother as Bianchi.
His real mother was allowed to see him three times a year until he was three, when she was killed after driving off a cliff on her way to see her son. It was probably not an accident, because, as Reborn says, "It slid off the road at an impossible location. It's been said that there weren't even tire marks. It was instant death." Suicide was considered, but she had been looking forward to that day and had even brought a present for the young Gokudera. Gokudera himself was unaware of what had happened until he was eight. He had overheard some servants gossiping and fled the mansion the day following.
[edit] Plot Overview
[edit] Daily Life Arc
Hayato "tests" Tsuna's worthiness for becoming the heir to the Vongola Family. Hayato becomes the first member of Tsuna's "family" after he saves Hayato from his wayward dynamite. After this, Hayato becomes fiercely loyal to Tsuna, and admires Tsuna to the point of extremes.
[edit] Kokuyo Arc
Gokudera was ranked third strongest in Namimori Middle School and was attacked by Chikusa. During the fight Chikusa realises he is part of the Vongola. When Tsuna arrived, Chikusa struck at Tsuna, forcing Hayato to take the brunt of his attack.
Hayato was healed by Dr. Shamal and joined in the assault on the enemy base, however he becomes a liability through out, due to the side effects of his treatment. Later Gokudera battled with Chikusa again, however Ken was able to strike from behind. Gokudera was able to free Hibari who fought them off. Hayato then gave Hibari Shamal's cure to the Sakura virus.
[edit] Varia Arc
Gokudera along with Yamamoto and Tsuna were defeated by Squalo. He was then given the Storm half Vongola ring. After causing much injury to himself while training alone Shamal decided train him but not heal his wounds.
In the Ring Tournament, Hayato fought against Belphegor in the Storm Ring Battle. Explosives were set up to explode after a certain time so Tsuna convinced Hayato not to risk his life. When the explosives went off, both Hayato and Belphegor survived but Belphegor was deemed the winner.
Along with the other Guardians, Gokudera took part in the Sky Ring Battle and was poisoned untill Hibari gave him the cure. Gokudera then defeated Levi and cured Lambo. He then cured Ryohei and met up with Yamamoto later. While trying to rescue Chrome both were caught in Mammon's illusion untill they were saved by Ryohei.
[edit] Future Arc
After Hayato was transported to the future, he decoded a note left by his future self written in G-script. After learning of what their purpose is in the future, Hayato and Tsuna were attacked by Lal Mirch. Lal later lead the two to the Vongola Base meeting Adult Yamamoto on the way. After setting out again with Yamamoto and Tsuna, the three see the Adult I-Pin, Lambo and Haru and being attacked by Millefiore members, Nosaru and Tazaru. Yamamoto then explained the use of waves and boxes to Gokudera. Gokudera manages to activate his future self's Box Weapon defeat Nosaru.
Hayato and Takeshi went to follow up a lead at Nammimori Shrine. They then encountered Gamma. Gokudera initially took Gamma on alone refusing to cooperate with Takeshi and was easily overpowered, but even when they worked together, Gamma far outmatched them both. During the battle Gokudera gave away that Tsuna is alive and was tortured. Hibari then showed up and saved them from Gamma. After recovering Gokudera then begain his training with his sister. However the two worked badly together even after she gave him the box weapons his future self left behind. He later escaped from her training and was not heard of again for some time.
After setting out and reaching Melone Base the group was split due to the base moving. Gokudera and Ryohei encountered, a recovered Gamma, who explained the layout of the base. Ryohei then tied Gokudera up in order to prevent him rushing in but was defeated while protecting him from Gamma's attack, leaving Gokudera with a rematch. Although at first Gokudera appeared to have an advantage with his Sisteima CAI, Gamma succeded in breaking his defenses and defeating Gokudera. However thanks to Ryohei's sun activation Gokudera's cat Uri grew up and helped in the fight against Gamma. Gokudera and Gamma exchanged final shots, resulting in an explosion that knocked the two out. Gokudera was later saved by the support group.
Along with the other guardians Gokudera was given a new Vongola box from his adult self. Hayato was later assigned by Dino to train Lambo and Ryohei (who had recently been replaced with his past self) in the use Rings and Boxes. He was chosen as one of the participants in the first Choice Battle. Gokudera was later confronted by Kikyo and had his Sistema C.A.I rendered useless by Kikyo's Bellflowers. Gokudera then attempted to pursue Kikyo on his motorcycle. However, his attacks were blocked and he was knocked off his bike.
Gokudera, Ryohei and Basil are injured by the Six Funeral Wreaths while trying to save Uni. He later volunteers (despite Tsuna's worries) to work with Lal Mirch and Gamma (who had recently sided with the Vongola) to act as the first line of defence. They soon encounter Zakuro who after opening the hell hole defeats Lal and Gamma. Using his Vongola box Gokudera was able to blow Zakuro's arm off but before a conclusion could be reached Bluebell arrived. Gokudera, who had been previously weakened due to a back injury, was rendered incapable of moving. Gokudera was then saved by the Varia's sudden apperance.
[edit] Relationships
[edit] Bianchi
Bianchi is Gokudera's half-sister, although they have a difficult relationship. In the future arc Binachi reveals that their common parent is their father and Gokudera is an illegitimate child. Gokudera can't see her without becoming very ill. Bianchi later remedies this by wearing glasses, goggles, or anything that covers her face around him. Their strained relationship stems from their youth, when Bianchi would use Gokudera as a test subject for her latest poisonous creation.
[edit] Parents
Gokudera loved his mother very much, but she died in a car accident on the way to see him. It turned out that his father had her "taken care of" as she was his mistress and not his wife.
Gokudera had a bad relationship with his father. He was the boss of another mafia family and as Gokudera was his illegitimate child he paid less attention to him and favoured Bianchi, his legitimate child.
[edit] Tsuna
After being saved by Tsuna, Gokudera pledged his loyalty to Tsuna as the tenth boss of the Vongola family. He is fiercely loyal to him, but shows that he wants to be his friend, not just his subordinate. This comes from Gokudera overhearing Tsuna and Reborn discussing their relationship. With this information, he became a better friend to Tsuna and turned down a promotion from the ninth (IX) boss that was actually a test to gauge his loyalty. When highly praising Tsuna, he is depicted as a dog sometimes.
[edit] Yamamoto
Gokudera sees Yamamoto as a rival for the position of Tsuna's right-hand man, and as such seems to dislike him intensely. He is also sometimes very jealous of him, of either his talent or his close relationship with Tsuna. Despite Gokudera's strained opinion, the two are friends and spend a lot of time together; Yamamoto often holds Gokudera back when he's upset or the two fight together as a team. Although he states that he hates Yamamoto, due to his all-around good-guy personality, he sees him as one of his few close friends. Gokudera seems to trust Yamamoto, enough to leave things to him and entrust Tsuna's safety to him.
[edit] Dr. Shamal
Gokudera met the good doctor when he was young. He wanted to be his apprentice, but was turned down. The doctor turned him on to his current form of attack, dynamite. Shamal also agreed to train him during the Varia Arc. Their relationship is strained, at best, but it could be viewed as similar to Tsuna's relationship with his father, as both the older men have only the best intentions for their younger counterparts.
[edit] Abilities
Gokudera is known as "Smokin' Bomb Hayato" (スモーキン・ボム 隼人, Sumōkin Bomu Hayato?) in the manga and Hurricane Bomb Hayato in the anime, using dynamite as his signature weapon. During Gokudera's "dynamite maintenance", it is revealed that he carries huge amounts of dynamite on him at all times. The bombs he has used in the series are:
| Skill | Description |
|---|---|
| Pick Pocket Bomb | Puts a single bomb on target using his agile movements. First used against Namimori High School Karate Club. |
| Double Bomb | Double the bombs. First used against Tsuna. |
| Triple Bomb | Triple the bombs. First used against Tsuna, perfected in the Storm Ring Battle against Belphegor. |
| Double Bomb with Mini Bombs | Double the bombs with mini bombs added in. First used against Chikusa, threw small bombs before normal bombs to create an illusion that they were all the same size |
| Speed Bomb | First used against Chikusa Kakimoto. He used a small bomb, threw it up in the air which created an explosion and made a momentum. |
| Bomb Sprays | First used against Storm Ring Battle. Gokudera throws a lot of bombs in close proximity to his opponent. |
| Rocket Bomb | First used against Bel. Rocket Bombs were meant to offset the fact that although all of Gokudera's attacks were powerful, they were slow and inaccurate. |
| Smoke Bomb | Uses a bomb as a smokescreen so he can flee or attack. |
Sistema C.A.I.Recently when training with Bianchi he receives two belts with five customized black skull ring boxes on them. These were left by his future self and are apparently part of the Sistema C.A.I. attack his future self developed and which his past self has completed it. The Sistema C.A.I. or Sistema Cambio Arma Istantaneo (lit. System Change Arms Instantaneous or Instantaneous Arms Change System in Italian ) is a system of box weapons that utilize the flames that flow within his body. It runs on this principle: while everyone is aligned with one of the seven ring elements, in order to draw out the Dying Will Flame, a person will end up drawing other attribute flames that are weaker then the wielder's main attribute. Sistema C.A.I. is designed to use such weaker flames to utilize multiple rings to open and complement his storm-based element. So far his cannon has shown two abilities. When loaded with lit dynamite, Flame Arrow expels a gust of Storm Flame. With this powerful Storm Flame gust, the cannon can temporarily diffuse the Dying Will Flames of others. Aside from diffusing the flames it does no damage, however. The second ability, the more offensive one, is uitlized by loading an unlit dynamite stick. It allows the cannon to shoot a destructive explosive blast.. Flame Arrow communicates its needs through a projection of italian words. It is later revealed to be the main offensive weapon in the Sistema C.A.I. and gains new functions with each Flame Attribute.
- Rain: By coating the storm rockets with the Rain's Tranquility, enemy's flames are weakened, allowing the rockets to bypass the enemy's defense.
- Sun: The Sun's "activation" and high power output increases the speed of the storm rockets, creating a attack with an unpredictable acceleration.
- Cloud: The cannon fires one shot that spreads in a tree-diagram like fashion, due to Cloud's propagation, creating a wide spread attack that is difficult to avoid.
- Thunder: A solid beam, due to the lightning's solidification. Gokudera claims it is his strongest attack.
Cambio Forma: G. Archery
- Uri fuses with Flame Arrow and transforms to makes a bone bow Set with the roman numeral "I" and a drawstring covered in Storm Flames. It was said that the first Storm Guardian received it directly from the Primo himself. Zakuro points out that he can 'charge' his attack.
Gattling Arrow: Gokudera fires several storm flame arrows at once, first used against Zakuro. Currently only four arrows have been shot at once, it is unknown if Gokudera has the capacity to shoot more.
