The Dying Will Flame (Viz: Deathperation Flame) is regarded as the symbol of the Vongola Famiglia. At the beginning of the series, it had only minor relevance with the overall plot (mostly through its relation with Reborn's Dying Will Bullet and Tsuna's "resurrected" form). But as the story progressed, it became a more a more central element and is currently the source of most of the supernatural powers seen in the series.
There are many items in the series that light up and/or use Dying Will Flames for some purpose. Among those, the Rings treasured by the Mafia deserve a special mention due to their long history and importance. In the Future Arc, the Flames of these Rings serve as the power source for the Box Weapons.
Nature
Flame Attributes
The Dying Will Flame is described as high-density form of energy that is refined from one's own life-force. Due the way how it resonates with one's emotions, it has been regarded as a type of battle aura. However, unlike the aura, which is a supernatural phenomenon can only be seen by a few individuals, the Dying Will Flame is in many ways more akin to a real flame, possessing even its own destructive properties.
There are a total of seven different types of Dying Will Flame, each shaded with a different color of the rainbow. These seven Attributes of Dying Will Flames are named after the titles of the Vongola Boss and his Guardians, and are collectively known as the "Seven Flames of the Sky". Now, while they are all referred as "flames", some Attributes actually have properties more similar to other natural elements, such as water and electricity.
Dying Will Flames are graded accordingly with their purity, which has a direct relationship with the strength of an individual's resolve. Among other things, this rate of purity serves to indicate how much of the special characteristics of the Flames are being drawn out. Each Flames Attribute has its own special characteristic.
The Seven Flames of Sky
Sky (Cielo)
Hard Sky Flame
Color: Orange
Characteristic: Harmony (Armonia)

Description: Those who possess Sky Flames are exceedingly rare, and possibly the most powerful people in the world. The characteristic of harmony is said to maintain the balance between the other Flames, and contains neither contradiction nor conflict.
Appearance: The Sky Flame has an orange center for the Flame, then a pale orange for the outer spiking, that of which is similar in appearance to Rain Flames, with largish oscillating spikes.
Storm (Tempesta)
Color: Red
Storm Flame
Characteristic: Degeneration (Distruzione)

Ability: Degeneration

Description: Anything that touches Storm Flames begins to break down and corrode, even other Flames. These Flames are highly offensive.
Appearance: The Storm Flame appears to be almost opaque in appearance. Having a red color at the center, then an inner area of a very pale red-white, and an outer spiking of deep red coloring that resembles a real fire. In the manga, the ends of the Flames are distinctively dark.
Rain (Pioggia)
Rain Flame
Color: Blue
Characteristic: Tranquility (Calma)

Ability: Calm (Chinsei)/ (静穏)
Known Users: Yamamoto, Colonnello, Bluebell, Lal Mirch, Glo Xinia, Squalo, Basil, Olgert, Gokudera, Asari Ugetsu, Schnitten Brabanters
Description: These Flames weaken other Flames and Attacks such as Illusions, rendering them almost completely ineffective. The stronger the Flames, the weaker the enemy's Attacks become. It can also weaken or slow down the oppnent's body and movements. An example is when Yamamoto used Attaco di Squalo on Genkishi, which weakened his muscles, as well as in the rematch with Genkishi when Yamamoto used Aggregate Art: Rainy Metamophosis to slow down the multiple attacks of Genkishi in his Hell Ring Form.
Appearance: The Rain Flame appears to have sparkles of some type running through it, giving it a similar appearance to water ripples. It is more or less opaque, and has a dark blue at the center while the outer part of the Flame is a pale light blue with large, oscillating spikes.
Sun (Sereno)

Characteristic: Activation (Attivazione)

Known Users: Ryohei, Reborn, Daisy, Shoichi Irie, Lussuria, Ginger Bread, Knuckle, Gokudera, Brow Nie Jr.
Description: Sun Flames initiate processes and speed them up at an incredible rate. Difficult to use offensively, the activation is usually used effectively for healing rather than power up purposes, with the exception of Ryohei's Three Minute Power-Up.
Appearance: Sun Flames have a constant yellow coloring throughout the whole Flame, and circular "shines" of light emanating from it as well. They appear to be constantly in motion, spiking in some places and flowing in others.
Lightning (Fulmine)

Color: Green
Characteristic: Solidification (Indurimento)
Japanese Translation: Kaminari (雷)
Known Users: Lambo, Verde, Ghost, Gamma, Leviathan, Dendro Chilum, Gokudera, Lampo, Ganauche III
Description: These Flames are the most solid flames and have the ability to harden anything infused with the Flames, increasing their offensive and defensive properties. This Flame is very unique as it has more of an electrical quality than actual Flame, as it is used to electrocute opponents rather than burn them.
Appearance: Lightning Flames have the appearance of lightning. The center is an off-white green, and the extremely sharp "spikes" of Flame are a dark neon green in color. They have a tendency to form round shapes with the sharper part flailing around, like how electricity is often times shown.
Cloud (Nuvola)
Cloud Flame
Color: Purple
Characteristic: Propagation (Propagazione)
Japanese Translation: Kumo (雲)
Ability: Multiplication (Zoushoku)/ (乗法)
Known Users: Hibari, Skull, Kikyo, Nigella Beankabul, Iris Hepburn, Lal Mirch, Gokudera, Alaude, Visconti
Description: Cloud Flames and Cloud Flame-based Weapons absorb other Flames to grow in size or multiply, and can even cause phenomenal growth in human beings if their bodies are altered. Hibari can use the Flames like a shield, as seen when he defends Genkishi's attack with his Flames.
Appearance: These have a dark purple at the center, and a pale light purple for the rest of the Flame. And, unlike Rain Flames, which have sharp oscillating spikes, Cloud Flames have small rounds of flame instead of points.
Mist (Nebbia)
Mist Flame
Color: Indigo
Characteristic: Construction (Costruzione)
Japanese Translation: Kiri (霧)
Known Users: Mukuro Rokudo, Chrome Dokuro, Viper, Torikabuto, Genkishi, Kawahira, Lal Mirch, Flan, Daemon Spade, Kyoya Hibari, Bouche Croquant
Description: Mist Flames are capable of generating Illusions and constructing them into real, solid objects.
Appearance: Mist Flames have an off-white indigo for the majority of the Flame, and a gradually darkening indigo for the rest of the Flame deepening outward. They flow gently like real mist but don't fade out of sight.
Snow (Neve)
Snow Flame
Color: White
Characteristic: Immobilization (Immobilizzazione)
Description: Snow Flames seem to operate similar to Giotto's Zero Point Breakthrough in that they are capable of freezing the Flames of adversaries. But the flames can also be used to make ice and snow for attacking and defending.
Japanese Translation: Yuki (雪）
Known Users: Gelaro
Appearance: Snow Flames seem to vaguely resemble Mist Flames, though are much lighter in appearance. The margins of the flame are gradually turning into a light blue color, also, there are some "sparkling" elements inside the flame.
Trivia
- During the beginning of the series, there was no distinction among the different types and colors of Dying Will Flames other than Tsuna's Orange one. The first person introduced with a different type of Dying Will Flame was Basil with a blue colored Flame, which was later known as the Rain Flame. And, Xanxus's Flames are also different in shape.
- Due to this, in the game Jump Ultimate Stars, the special-up and the special move for Tsuna's first and second koma shown a blue flame, resembles Basil's flame instead of the normal orange one.
- Also, when Ryohei was shot by a Dying Will Bullet, and the Flame showed was a Sky Flame, not his real Flame, which is the Sun Flame.
- There is no Snow Flame in the original series and it only appears in the game.
- Gokudera is the only character so far to possess five Flames, but his true, strongest Flame is Storm.
- The Giegue Famiglia was defeated by an unknown female fighter (who was later revealed to be Suzuki Adelheid) that used a Flame that didn't belong to any Attribute of the Seven Flames of the Sky. Those Flames are later revealed to be one of the "Seven Flames of the Earth". It is currently unknown how the Seven Flames of the Earth differ from the Dying Will Flames and what the names of its Attributes are.
